Summary of This Score

Composed in 1888, Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 is structured around a "per aspera ad astra" dramaturgy, where inner struggle, the question of fate, and the conquest of final certainty shape the musical arc. After the premiere in Saint Petersburg, the composer experienced strong doubts, even considering adjustments for a performance in Hamburg in 1889 (including a cut in the finale). However, these modifications are not precisely known, as Tchaikovsky's conducting copy is lost; they survive only indirectly through annotations left by Willem Mengelberg, based on the composer's score and oral indications reported by Modest Tchaikovsky.

This new edition therefore aims to establish a reliable and usable text by comparing available sources: autograph manuscript, first edition, period orchestral parts, as well as the piano reduction made from the autograph by Sergei Taneyev. The editorial work goes beyond correcting typos: it illuminates the orchestral writing (dynamics, articulations, phrasing details) and resolves problematic passages, such as the trombone entrance at measure 372 of the finale. Underlying this, the edition also invites a more lucid reading of the work, where interpretative "certainties" benefit from being examined in light of the "uncertainties" left by the history of performance and reception.
