Mauro Giuliani is today considered one of the most important composer-guitarists of the early 19th century. A virtuoso admired far beyond the circle of guitarists alone, he held during his lifetime a prominent place among the most respected musicians of his era, thanks to a complete and versatile mastery of music. Yet, by the end of the 19th century, his name and works gradually disappeared from programs, maintaining only a marginal presence in the repertoire of major performers of the early 20th century.

This rediscovery of Giuliani is based on considerable musicological work, initiated notably by Thomas Heck as early as 1971 and continued by several specialists. In this continuity, the edition proposed by Frédéric Zigante emphasizes the reliability of sources: the pieces in this collection are established from the texts of the first publications, with a deliberately measured editorial intervention.

The goal is clear: to offer a classical guitar score that is both respectful and practical. The revision is essentially limited to the addition of fingerings, designed according to the technique documented in Giuliani's own methods (notably the Studio per la chitarra op. 1 and the Esercizio per la chitarra op. 48, published by Steiner in 1813), as well as the correction of obvious typographical errors. The result offers a smooth reading, useful for study as well as concert performance, and particularly relevant for those seeking phrasing, articulation, and left-hand logic typical of the Romantic style.
