Summary of This Score

In these Romances sans paroles, Fauré already reveals a personal language: singing lines, refined rhythmic flexibility, and above all, sometimes unexpected modulations and harmonic progressions that characterize his style. The title evokes the "Songs without Words" (Lieder ohne Worte) and suggests a youthful homage to Mendelssohn, while maintaining a fully Fauréan identity. These are the only three pieces that Fauré wrote in this genre, among his earliest published works for piano.

This score emphasizes the richness of the original piano text, often underestimated: the performer must simultaneously manage a very vocal melody and elaborate accompaniments, sometimes distributed in imitation between voices. The writing, dense and subtle, can even approach the study in some respects, as it demands hand independence, legato quality, and balance of sound layers.

The edition is part of a rediscovery effort: for a long time, these pages circulated also in the form of transcriptions for violin or cello and piano, which may have softened some of the most daring harmonic passages, particularly in the second Romance. Here, the pianist regains the full breadth of the original colors, with a critical perspective enhanced by the contribution of alternative readings drawn from the sound testimony left by the composer for the third piece.
