A Modern "Box All In One" for Mobile Bassists
The BAIO B (standing for "Box All In One") was designed as an all-in-one solution for bassists who want a refined sound without carrying an amp, cabinet, and pedalboard. The idea is simple: a complete preamp section, essential effects, and bass cabinet impulse responses (IRs) to restore a more "cabinet" feel, all in a compact and autonomous pedal. The 8 built-in IRs were selected and adapted by Massimo Varini, based on work done by Drapsound, to provide a coherent and immediately usable foundation on stage, in the studio, or through headphones.
Who Is It For and In What Contexts?
The EKO BAIO B is aimed equally at the beginner bassist who wants a clean, ready-to-play sound, and the experienced musician looking for a rehearsal tool, fly-rig, or backup solution. It is especially suitable for styles where the bass needs to remain clear and controlled (pop, funk, rock, gospel, indie), but can also cover more textured approaches thanks to modulations and ambiances (post-rock, ambient, worship).
In practice, it excels in three situations: silent rehearsals (headphone output + Bluetooth), live playing through an amp or PA system, and quick recording thanks to its audio interface function (computer or smartphone). With its presets, you can prepare a "clean compressed" sound, a "wide chorus" sound, and a "delay/reverb" sound for more spacious passages, then switch between them with your foot.
Controls, Modes, and Connectivity: A Pedal Designed to Be Intuitive
The preamp section provides the essentials to shape an effective bass tone: Gain, 3-band EQ, and compression. For space and movement, the Mod control accesses modulations (chorus and phaser), while a dedicated button activates delay and reverb. The Time setting adjusts the delay time and reverb amount, allowing you to go from simple thickening to more enveloping ambiances without losing note attack.
The IR knob selects one of the 8 built-in impulse responses, and the Out control adjusts the output volume. The 3 footswitches allow toggling between Preset mode (use and edit the 3 presets) and Live mode (separate control of IR/Rev, Chorus/Phaser, and Preamp blocks). On foot, you can also activate Bluetooth and the tuner with Mute function to change instruments or tune silently.
On the rear, the pedal offers an instrument input and an amp output in 6.35mm Jack format, an ON/OFF switch, a micro USB port for power/charging and computer connection, as well as a 3.5mm mini-jack headphone output for silent playing. A "Phone" micro USB connection also allows using the BAIO B as an audio interface with a smartphone via the supplied cable, convenient for capturing ideas or quickly publishing takes.
The Sound
The BAIO B aims for a modern, clean, and controllable signature, with dynamics tailored for bass: compression helps stabilize the attack, the 3-band EQ allows precise placement of lows and mids, and the IRs add a more organic feel than a simple direct signal, especially through headphones or in recordings. Modulations (chorus/phaser) add dimension without masking the low end, while delay and reverb serve both to widen the soundstage and create deeper atmospheres. By adjusting gain and IR choice, you can easily switch from a "studio tight" sound to a fuller bass, ideal for melodic parts or airy intros.
