Modern Harmonization by Electro Harmonix
With the Intelligent Harmony Machine, Electro Harmonix offers a pedal dedicated to one of the most spectacular textures in electric guitar: real-time harmonization. Launched in 2021, it follows in the tradition of the great two- or three-part melodic lines that have shaped rock, hard rock and melodic metal, while making them accessible in a compact enclosure.
Within the EHX range, this model occupies a particularly interesting position: more specialized than a simple octaver, yet more straightforward to use than a complex processor. The idea is clear: to offer guitarists a creative tool capable of generating harmonies that remain coherent with the key being played, without sacrificing spontaneity or the feel of playing.
Which guitarists and applications is it designed for?
The Electro Harmonix Intelligent Harmony Machine is aimed both at curious guitarists looking to add depth to their solos and at experienced musicians seeking a compact harmonizer for the stage. It is perfectly suited to blues rock, hard rock, metal, progressive rock, modern pop, worship and even ambient, whenever the goal is to thicken a melodic line or create instant counter-melodies.
In the studio, it makes it possible to quickly build multi-part arrangements without layering several takes. Live, it becomes an excellent way to recreate the fullness of a guitar duo with a single instrument. Its compact format and clear control layout also make it highly practical for crowded pedalboards, where every centimetre counts.
Intelligent modes, from subtle doubling to wide harmonic intervals
The first major strength of this pedal is its Intelligent Harmony mode. You select a key, and the pedal automatically generates a diatonic harmony suited to the notes you play. This makes it possible to obtain thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths or sevenths that remain musical within the selected key, with options extending to two- and three-part harmonies.
The Polyphonic Override mode expands the possibilities even further. Here, the pedal applies polyphonic interval shifts to both individual notes and chords. You can select a doubler, a lower perfect fourth, a lower third, an upper third, an upper perfect fourth, an upper perfect fifth, a lower second, an upper second, a lower octave, an upper octave, or even a combination of upper fifth plus upper octave.
A Major/Minor selector lets you adjust the major or minor character of seconds and thirds, significantly increasing its musical versatility. The Momentary mode adds a highly expressive dimension: the effect is activated only while the footswitch is held down. Depending on the selected setting, the transition between the dry signal and the transposed signal can be instantaneous or take place over a sweep time defined by the userâideal for spectacular rises, controlled descents or occasional solo accents.
The Mix control lets you precisely adjust the balance between the direct signal and the processed signal. This is essential, as you can aim for anything from a subtle thickening to a fully pronounced effect. The presence of a dry output adds routing flexibility, whether sending the signal to a second amplifier, a wider stereo system in a live setup, or a parallel effects chain.
The Sound
The sonic character of the Intelligent Harmony Machine is based above all on its clean tracking and smooth response. The harmonies follow your playing with good stability, helping to maintain a natural feel even during fast phrases. The result remains singing, precise and clear, without sounding like a cold effect disconnected from the pick attack.
With a subtle setting, the doubler mode or simple intervals add body and fullness without altering the character of the guitar. Moving towards fifths, octaves or multiple harmonies opens the door to much more theatrical textures, in the spirit of the great harmonized guitar parts popularized by bands with two lead guitarists. Twin lines from classic rock and melodic metal immediately come to mind, but the pedal can also produce more modern, almost cinematic arrangements when the momentary mode is used with a gradual sweep.
Another appreciated feature is that the pedal remains equally useful for melodic riffs and lead phrases. The sound retains a strong sense of cohesion, allowing you to move from simple melodic reinforcement to a true compositional effect. For guitarists looking to step beyond the usual single-line solo, it is a particularly inspiring tool.

Questions frequently asked
Can the Electro Harmonix Nano Intelligent Harmony Machine create harmonies in key?
The Intelligent Harmony mode generates diatonic intervals according to the selected key. Two- or three-part harmonies can be achieved using thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, or sevenths.
Which intervals are available in Polyphonic Override mode?
Polyphonic Override mode offers intervals including doubling, seconds, thirds, fourths, fifths, and octaves above or below. A combination of upper fifth + upper octave is also available, as well as a lower fourth + upper third option.
Does the effect work on chords?
Polyphonic processing applies to single notes as well as chords in Polyphonic Override mode.
How is Momentary mode used on this pedal?
In Momentary mode, the effect remains active only while the footswitch is held. Switching between dry and shifted signal can be instantaneous or follow an adjustable sweep time to create interval rises or falls.
Does the pedal have a separate dry output?
A dry output is provided to retrieve the direct signal independently of the effected signal. This connection allows routing to a second amplifier, a stereo system, or a parallel effects chain. The dry/effect blend is controlled by the Mix knob.
