A Set Born from a Challenge: Modern Precision with the Impact of Great Metal Tones
In early 2009, James Hetfield contacted Rob Turner, president of EMG, with a very specific request: to create a set with a military-inspired look, capable of capturing the attack, definition, and punch loved in passive pickups, while maintaining the personality and consistency of the active pickups that defined a generation. The result: a duo tailored for heavy rhythms, massive palm-mutes, and saturated registers that need to remain clear.
Who Is This EMG JH Set For?
This set is aimed at guitarists who play loud, tight, and precise, and want immediate dynamics under their fingers: modern metal, thrash, hard rock, drop tunings, fast rhythms, and complex chords under saturation. If you're looking for an active pickup that retains clarity in the lows, a sharp attack, and excellent note separation, the JH Set is a fearsomely effective choice both in the studio and on stage.
Two Complementary Pickups: Bright Attack at the Neck, Sharp Definition at the Bridge
The JH-N neck pickup uses individual ceramic pole pieces with wider and taller cores: the attack is bright and the output level high, perfect for thick leads, more present cleans, and clear rhythms without losing body. The JH-B bridge pickup follows the same philosophy, with individual steel pole pieces: it delivers a well-defined attack, precise response, and a clear signal decay, ideal for fast riffs, tight alternate picking, and harmonics that need to cut through instantly.
