Historical Context and Positioning in the Range

The ENGL E 650/2 Ritchie Blackmore Signature 100 is a tube guitar amp head designed to capture a very "guitar hero" approach to tone: articulation, presence, and control. Developed as a signature model associated with Ritchie Blackmore, it fits within the spirit of ENGL heads known for their precise and powerful character, with deliberately straightforward ergonomics. Within the lineup, it targets guitarists seeking a high-end amp head oriented towards rock to metal, with immediately usable voicings without getting lost in dozens of options.

Who This Amp Is For

This amp head is made for intermediate to pro-level guitarists looking for a true all-tube behavior: feel under the fingers, interaction with guitar volume and pick attack. It works very well for rehearsals and live performances thanks to its 100W power and two Masters, and it can also be an excellent choice in the studio for clear and defined rock/metal recordings. Style-wise, it naturally covers hard rock, heavy metal, classic rock, and more modern genres when pushing the Lead channel (even more so with an upstream boost).

Features and Innovations

The philosophy of the E 650/2 is straightforward: a two-channel structure (Clean and Lead) with Lo Gain / Hi Gain modes that translate into 4 distinct channels/voicings, very easy to use live. There is independent gain on the Clean and Lead channels, a shared 3-band EQ, and two Master A and Master B controls to instantly switch between two volume levels. The Lead channel additionally features dedicated Volume and Presence controls, ideal for adjusting bite and projection without disturbing the overall balance. For comfort at high gain, a Noise Gate with threshold adjustment is integrated. Finally, the footswitchable effects loop simplifies integration of delays, reverbs, or modulations, and the SAC port allows use of an optional ENGL Z-9 footswitch to centralize essential changes.

The Sound

This is an all-tube amp head with a sound that is both full and very clear: cleans that are bright and solid (with sustain when played hard), a crunch that is punchy yet retains chord detail, and a lead that can range from dense rock saturation to a more modern high gain while remaining tight and defined. The Bright and Contour switches help position the amp in the mix: more sparkle and attack to stand out in a band, or a voicing that enhances body and midrange signature. This model is regularly associated with styles from muscular rock to metal, and is cited in rigs of artists like Ritchie Blackmore, Paul Stanley, Vivian Campbell, and Olve "Abbath" Eikemo, illustrating its ability to cover both vintage punch and more modern saturations.
