A Tribute to a Bluegrass Icon and a Banjo That Made History

Earl Scruggs profoundly impacted banjo history by popularizing three-finger picking, which became the famous "Scruggs style," a cornerstone of bluegrass and a major influence far beyond the genre. The Epiphone Earl Scruggs Golden Deluxe continues this lineage by capturing the aesthetic spirit and manufacturing philosophy of a legendary model: the rare Gibson RB-Granada Mastertone 5-string that accompanied Earl for decades. Here, you find the "vintage deluxe" codes (gilding, engravings, traditional inlays) combined with a construction designed for power and precision.

For Which Musicians and Styles?

This resonator banjo is primarily aimed at intermediate to advanced players seeking a quick response, excellent note-to-note definition, and stage-ready finish quality. It excels in bluegrass (rolls, fingerpick attacks), but is also well-suited for country, folk, and any context where a sharp, articulated, and highly projected sound is desired. Its playability (C-profile, 22 medium/large frets) also makes it an excellent choice for developing speed and clarity in phrasing.

Sound Characteristics

The combination of a 3-ply maple body and a resonator promotes clear projection, a bright treble register, and a tight low-midrange, ideal for "cutting through the mix" in acoustic ensembles. The 11" / 279.4 mm frosted Remo head delivers the attack and bite sought after in bluegrass playing, with excellent roll clarity. The maple neck enhances the precise and percussive character, while the ebony fingerboard adds articulation sharpness and a controlled feel under the fingers. Overall, the sound aims to be powerful, crisp, and very defined, with dynamic response that highlights right-hand nuances.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To complement the included hard case, you may want to get a 5-string banjo string set (standard format), as well as a chromatic tuner to ensure accurate intonation both in rehearsal and on stage. To replicate traditional bluegrass playing sensations, metal fingerpicks and a thumbpick are also relevant choices.
