Summary of This Method

This second volume of "Progressive Jazz Studies" is aimed at saxophonists who want to take a step forward in their jazz practice, moving from reading studies to genuine musical expression. Through more than 40 original studies, James Rae offers a clear and musical progression, designed to consolidate the basics while opening the door to freer, more rhythmic, and more idiomatic playing.

The first part of the book focuses on an essential skill: knowing how to take an existing melody and transform it to make it sound jazz. The goal is to understand how to "jazzify" a simple tune, then learn to build a short but effective solo from any well-known theme. It works on timing, rhythmic intention, phrase construction, and coherence of the musical statement, in order to create an accessible yet convincing solo.

The second part deepens the different tonalities and harmonic colors specific to the jazz language. It guides the musician in mastering essential resources such as the blues scale, modes, whole tone scale, and diminished scale, while providing landmarks to confidently navigate progressions, especially the II-V-I cadence. Throughout the studies, the method aims for a concrete result: developing a vocabulary that can be used immediately, strengthening the ear, and gaining the confidence needed to play with a true sense of style.
