What FabFilter Pro-G Is Used For
FabFilter Pro-G is a gate/expander plug-in designed to clean up, control, and shape the dynamics of a recording or bus. It helps reduce unwanted noise between phrases (breath, bleed, ambience), enhance rhythmic impact (drums, percussion), or create clean, controlled ducking effects. Whether in the studio or live, Pro-G naturally integrates into a modern mixing workflow thanks to its fast controls, presets, and very clear visual feedback.
Main Features
6 processing styles for a gate that stays musical
Pro-G offers 6 meticulously tuned expander/gate algorithms, including upward expansion and ducking. The goal is simple: achieve clean closing without pumping or artifacts, and opening that respects the source. Program-dependent attack and release curves help maintain a natural sound even on complex signals.
Side chain and routing: a tool built for real-world situations
Whether processing a vocal track, snare drum, or ambience bus, flexible routing facilitates advanced mixing scenarios. You can work in mono, stereo, or mid/side, and enable an external side chain when you want to trigger the gate's open/close from another source. In Expert mode, side chain input and chaining become highly customizable, useful for managing drum bleed, multi-mic recordings, or very targeted ducking effects.
Visualization designed for quick decisions
Pro-G's strength also lies in making the processing instantly understandable. Input/output level indicators are accompanied by a real-time display of the level and transfer curve. The result: you see exactly when the gate opens, how much it reduces, and how the curve reacts, speeding up adjustments of range, hold, and reaction times.
User comfort and session integration
Designed for intensive use, Pro-G combines low CPU consumption, intelligent parameter interpolation for smooth transitions, and practical features like undo/redo and A/B comparison. Editing is fast thanks to value entry by double-click, and integration is facilitated with MIDI Learn as well as support for common Pro Tools hardware control surfaces. For creative applications, MIDI triggering even allows opening the gate/expander from a MIDI keyboard.

Questions frequently asked
Does FabFilter Pro-G work on Mac Apple Silicon and Windows?
The stated compatibility covers Windows from Vista onwards and macOS from 10.12 onwards, supporting both Apple Silicon and Intel Core processors.
Can an external side chain be used for ducking?
An external side chain can trigger the gate opening or closing from another source. The Expert mode allows customization of the side chain input and routing. This setup is particularly useful for targeted ducking and managing multi-mic bleed.
How many gate algorithms are available?
Six expander/gate algorithms are offered, including upward expansion and ducking, with program-dependent attack and release curves.
Can the FabFilter Pro-G license be activated on two machines?
The license with unlimited validity permits 2 simultaneous activations via online activation.
Can the gate be triggered via MIDI?
MIDI triggering allows opening the gate/expander from a MIDI keyboard. MIDI Learn and support for Pro Tools hardware control surfaces also facilitate parameter control.
