A Pickup Born in the 1970s, Now a Reference
In the early 1970s, Fender sought to offer its own alternative to the then-popular humbuckers. The brand enlisted Seth Lover to design a high-output double coil pickup capable of maintaining a brighter and more detailed signature. The original Wide Range, thanks to its large coils and threaded CuNiFe magnetic rods, created the distinctive tone associated with the Telecaster Custom, Thinline, and Deluxe models of that era. After production of the Telecaster Custom ceased in 1979, genuine CuNiFe Wide Range pickups became rare and highly sought after.
