Summary of This Score

Written in 1821, this Adagio highlights the art of singing on the clarinet, in line with the emerging Romantic aesthetic. Baermann, the renowned dedicatee of Weber's clarinet works, perfectly understands the expressive possibilities of the instrument: broad melodic lines, breath conceived as a voice, and a subtle balance between lyricism and restraint. The piano accompaniment is carefully crafted, supporting the harmony and musical tension without weighing down the discourse, making it an ideal piece for working on listening and ensemble coordination in a duo setting.

The score is also distinguished by its unique history: an unsigned manuscript discovered in 1922 was long considered a youthful work by Wagner. It was only in 1964 that it was established to be the Adagio from the Quintet No. 3 Op. 23 with strings, taken from its original score. This identification gives the piece a special interest, both musically and historically, while maintaining a very direct approach for the performer.

With a duration of about 4 minutes 15 seconds, this movement fits easily into an audition, exam, or concert program. The intermediate/advanced level suits clarinetists wishing to deepen their legato, intonation in the chalumeau and clarion registers, as well as the management of crescendos and phrase endings. The arrangement by Renaud Escriva offers a clear and musical reading, designed to showcase the B-flat clarinet while preserving the stylistic coherence of the work.
