Vary the pressure and scraping speed to modulate intensity, and alternate long and short scrapes to create patterns. This type of playing is particularly interesting to "fill" the space between beats, add a steady movement, or establish a flowing sensation in Latin, folk, acoustic pop music or song accompaniment.

Shaker mode: tempo marking with a shaken gesture

As a shaker, you shake the instrument: the internal beads produce a rhythmic sound ideal for marking the pulse, emphasizing off-beats, and creating accents. Work on different gestures (back-and-forth, sharp hits, circular movements) to achieve varied articulations. The instrument then becomes an excellent support to learn regularity, placement, and dynamics, while remaining immediately gratifying to play.

Musical tip: alternate one measure in shaker mode (steady tempo) then one measure in guiro mode (continuous texture) to create a simple and effective contrast, or combine both uses in the same piece by changing roles according to sections (verse/chorus, break, phrase ending).
