A Gibson Icon Revisited in a More Accessible Version
Introduced in 1960, the Hummingbird established itself as one of Gibson's most recognizable square-shouldered acoustics. This Hummingbird Special retains the essential markers of the model (square-shoulder silhouette, parallelogram inlays, pickguard with iconic graphics) while offering a more straightforward approach, notably thanks to its satin nitrocellulose finish and "concert depth" body, designed for comfort and better mix integration.
Who This Hummingbird Special Is For
This electro-acoustic guitar is aimed at ambitious beginners as well as intermediate and advanced musicians who want a characterful, versatile folk guitar that's immediately usable on stage. It excels in strumming (pop, rock, country, folk) with a solid rhythmic foundation, while remaining expressive in fingerstyle thanks to a balanced response and generous dynamics.
The Sound
The solid Sitka spruce top delivers projection, precision, and a clear attack, while the solid mahogany back and sides add warmth, present mids, and a very musical woody tone. The scalloped X-bracing promotes top resonance, enhancing dynamics and the feeling of responsiveness under the fingers. The square-shouldered body maintains typical breadth, but the "concert depth" slightly tightens the low end: resulting in more controlled bass, a clear midrange, and a guitar that sits easily in an arrangement. Plugged in, the L.R. Baggs Element Bronze captures a direct and effective sound image, ideal for the stage, with a volume control quickly accessible in the soundhole.
Recommended Compatible Accessories
To fully exploit this electro-acoustic folk guitar, you may want to consider a set of acoustic folk guitar strings (steel) and a 6.35 mm instrument jack cable for connection to an acoustic amp, PA system, or interface.
