The Essentials to Know About the Gibson Les Paul Custom Long Scale Ebony Modern Guitar

  • Long scale 25.5" / 647.7 mm: more tension, more attack, and an ideal response for lower tunings.

  • Custom Shop Construction: one-piece mahogany body with 9-hole weight relief, 2-piece maple top, mahogany neck with long tenon for generous sustain.

  • Ebony fingerboard 12" / 304.8 mm: fast feel, clear notes, 22 medium jumbo frets, and luxurious "tuxedo" style finishes.

  • 490R + 498T Humbuckers: from smooth jazz tones to modern drive, meticulous wiring with CTS components and Switchcraft.

A Revisited Les Paul Custom: The 1953 Heritage Serving a More Tense Modern Collection

Introduced at the end of 1953, the Les Paul Custom established itself as the pinnacle of the Les Paul style: black elegance, multiple binding, pearloid block inlays, and unmatched stage presence. In the Gibson Custom Modern Collection, it retains this reference status, designed for demanding guitarists who want a Les Paul with an iconic look, combined with comfort and precision worthy of current standards.

This Long Scale version takes the idea further: it retains the DNA of the Les Paul Custom Modern but swaps the traditional shorter scale length for a 25.5" / 647.7 mm. The result is immediate under the fingers: a firmer feel, a sharper attack, and better tuning stability in dropped tunings, all while remaining 100% Les Paul in aesthetics and sonic signature.

Who Is This Les Paul Custom Long Scale For? A Custom for Modern Players, Drop Tunings, and Precise Rhythms

This electric guitar is primarily aimed at intermediate to expert guitarists who already know their touch preferences. The long scale provides extra resistance that will appeal to fans of precise picking, tight rhythms, and spot-on timing. If you often play in Drop D, lower tunings, or prefer a well-tensioned low string, this setup is clearly designed for you.

In terms of styles, it is comfortable across a wide spectrum: rock, hard rock, metal, fusion, and even jazz thanks to the warm and round 490R neck pickup. The comfort of the Modern Medium C profile and the ebony fingerboard also favor fast runs, controlled bends, and clean lead playing, while maintaining the weight and authority of a high-end Les Paul.

A Les Paul Custom Sound with More Snap: Mahogany, Maple, Ebony, and Calibrated Humbuckers

The tonal foundation comes from a one-piece mahogany body, renowned for its dense mids, warmth, and that "note that sustains" feel. The 9-hole weight relief reduces weight while preserving the Les Paul personality: the guitar often gains perceived resonance and liveliness without losing the full and authoritative character expected from a Custom.

The 2-piece maple top adds definition: sharper attacks, clearer lows, and better-defined highs. On a Les Paul, this mahogany/maple duo is a classic to balance harmonic richness and precision. Here, the equation is further enhanced by the ebony fingerboard, appreciated for its smooth feel and quick response, with a very clean note contour, particularly useful in saturation and articulated playing.

The mahogany neck is assembled with a long tenon, a sought-after construction detail to optimize vibrational transfer. Practically, this results in solid sustain, a "connected" guitar feel, and great stability when playing aggressively. The 12" / 304.8 mm radius remains a comfortable standard: flat enough for bends and lead playing while maintaining natural ergonomics for chords.

On the electronics side, the pair of humbuckers 490R (neck) and 498T (bridge) covers a wide range. The 490R favors a round, singing register, ideal for thick clean tones, blues, and jazz textures. The 498T, more aggressive, pushes the amp harder: present mids, easy saturation, riffs that cut through, and leads that slice the mix. Hand wiring with 2 volumes, 2 tones, and a 3-position toggle switch allows fine dynamic shaping, from nuanced cleans to heavy modern gain, without losing the Custom spirit.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To get the most out of the 25.5" / 647.7 mm scale length, favor electric guitar string sets suited for long scale: a gauge like 10-46 will suit versatility, while heavier gauges will help maintain tension in lower tunings. A standard strap and an electric guitar capo will also be suitable if you alternate between rhythms and chord passages. The instrument comes with a hardshell case, so transport protection is already at Custom level.
