A Transitional Firebird: Tribute to the "Platypus" Design
In early 1965, the Firebird underwent several significant changes, including the adoption of a simpler, flat headstock paired with the "Non-Reverse" aesthetic. Nicknamed "Platypus" for its bill-like silhouette, this headstock replaced the more elaborate construction of the early Reverse Firebirds. The Firebird Platypus Tobacco Sunburst pays homage to these transitional models by adopting their distinctive visual identity while adapting it for modern use, notably through a straighter string pull to reduce friction and improve tuning stability.
For Which Guitarists and Styles?
This Firebird is aimed at intermediate to advanced guitarists seeking an electric guitar with strong character, both visually and musically. Its size and balance encourage standing play, while its ergonomics suit both punchy rhythm playing and expressive lead lines. It excels in rock, blues, and alternative rock genres, while remaining defined enough for articulate clean tones and more "vintage" textures.
Sound Characteristics
The mahogany body + mahogany neck duo provides a warm foundation, with present mids and natural sustain, ideal for highlighting playing nuances and attack dynamics. The Firebird mini humbuckers (historically accurate, Alnico 5 magnets) stand out for their precise articulation: in clean tones, they deliver a clear, detailed chime, almost "bell-like," with tight lows. When overdriven, they produce incisive rock and blues tones with great note separation and dynamic response. The 2 volume and 2 tone controls allow fine sculpting of the pickup balance, ranging from a punchy crunch to a rounder lead tone, without losing the Firebird signature.
