Paul Beard: A Modern Reference for the "Spider" Resonator

This Paul Beard resonator guitar embodies the spirit of contemporary "dobro" instruments, where acoustic craftsmanship meets ultra-efficient resonator mechanics. The combination of meticulous construction and a Beard spider cone aims for a clear result: a present, articulated sound capable of cutting through an acoustic mix while maintaining the typical feel of high-end resonators.

For Which Musician and Styles?

With its square neck and Open G tuning (G-B-D-G-B-D), this model is primarily intended for intermediate to advanced guitarists who play slide (flat on the lap or on a support). It is an excellent choice for bluegrass, country, americana, folk, and Hawaiian-inspired approaches, whenever one seeks clear attacks, singing notes, and rich open chords.

Sound Characteristics

The solid mahogany top provides a warm coloration, with dense mids and a nice roundness that avoids harshness. The mahogany back and sides reinforce this coherence, promoting a homogeneous and musical response. At the heart of the instrument, the Beard spider cone resonator transforms string energy into very direct projection: delivering a high acoustic volume, a clean attack, and excellent definition ideal for bottleneck licks and fast phrases.

The maple bridge with ebony insert contributes to the balance between clarity and precision, while the "spider" design emphasizes sustain and note separation, highly sought after for open tuning voicings. The glossy finish and chrome hardware complete the package with a refined and professional aesthetic.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To fully exploit a square neck, the use of a tone bar (slide bar for lap playing) and fingerpicks is particularly suitable: you will gain in control, attack, and power. A tuner is also useful to quickly stabilize the Open G tuning, especially in bluegrass jam settings.
