Summary of This Score

Twelve Sonatas for Two Violins, Cello and Keyboard, Op. 4, Vol. 1, Sonatas 1-3 by Henricus Albicastro (fl. 1695-c. 1738) offers a repertoire of typically Baroque chamber music centered on the dialogue between two violins supported by a cello and a basso continuo realizable on keyboard. This first volume gathers sonatas 1 to 3: an excellent choice to approach the Baroque sonata aesthetic in a reduced formation, with writing that highlights articulation, musical rhetoric, and voice balance.

Designed for flexible practice, the accompaniment is indicated for BC (basso continuo) or keyboard, allowing the ensemble size to be adapted according to context: harpsichord, positive organ, or piano, with or without a bass instrument doubling the bass line depending on ensemble habits. The two violins alternate between imitative passages, more virtuosic figures, and lyrical moments, while the bass line ensures harmonic stability and rhythmic drive.

With its 76 pages in score and separate parts, this edition facilitates rehearsal organization (individual reading, balance setup, work on cadences and ornamentation). It is suitable both for established ensembles and for specialized students wishing to enrich their Baroque repertoire, work on intonation and bow cohesion, or prepare for a chamber music audition.
