An Electromatic that Embraces the Gretsch Heritage of the 50s-60s
The G5420T embodies the spirit of the great Gretsch hollow bodies that defined the 50s and 60s, featuring an instantly recognizable aesthetic (binding, Plexi pickguard, nickel hardware) and a construction designed to recapture the "open" and lively character of a hollow body. Within the Electromatic range, it represents a major step to achieve the Gretsch look, feel, and sonic personality without compromising modern playability.
For Which Guitarist and Styles?
This Gretsch targets intermediate to advanced guitarists seeking an inspiring hollow body, equally comfortable in rhythm and lead playing. It excels in rockabilly, blues, vintage rock, country, pop, and roots jazz, and is very expressive with the Bigsby vibrato for nuances, wide vibratos, and breathing chords.
The Sound
Its laminated maple body (arched top and back) promotes clear projection and precise attack, with natural brightness and articulated low-mids. The Trestle Block bracing increases rigidity and internal contact, tightening the low end, providing a snappier response and more present sustain than a traditional hollow body, while helping to control unwanted effects at high volume. The two FT-5E Filter'Tron pickups deliver the classic Gretsch blend: defined grain, harmonic chime, and dynamic punch, with excellent note separation in chords. The electronics with separate volumes (one per pickup) plus master volume (with treble bleed) and master tone allow quick sculpting of sounds ranging from bright clean to vintage crunch, without losing highs when lowering the volume.
Recommended Compatible Accessories
To maintain the original feel and balance, choose a nickel electric string set .011-.049 (same gauge as factory-installed). A standard guitar strap is also suitable, as Gretsch strap buttons are already fitted on the instrument.
