A 1930s to 1950s "Mail-Order" Spirit, Updated for Today

Inspired by the "Rex" guitars sold via mail order in the mid-20th century, the Jim Dandy Concert captures the charm of the first flat-top Gretsch acoustics with more modern playability. Its Concert size and period details make it an instrument with an immediately familiar character, designed to accompany jam sessions, acoustic folk, and improvised moments.

Who Is It For, and What Styles?

The Gretsch Jim Dandy Concert suits both beginners seeking a comfortable guitar and experienced musicians who want a simple, inspiring, and easy-to-transport acoustic. The short scale favors chord playing, picking, and blues licks, while the Concert size remains versatile for folk, swing, and vocal accompaniment.

Sound

Thanks to its laminated sapele construction (top, back, and sides), the Jim Dandy delivers a warm tone with a rather soft attack and a present midrange, typical of a "vintage" style. The X-bracing helps balance projection and response, maintaining a consistent sound across the entire range. Its Concert size emphasizes clarity and definition, making it very enjoyable for fingerpicking and rhythmic accompaniment, with a smooth playing feel linked to the 24.75" / 629 mm scale length.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

This guitar comes equipped with D'Addario EJ16 Phosphor Bronze Light (.012-.053) strings: you can stick with this gauge to maintain the comfort/projection balance or get an identical set for replacement. For other accessories (gig bag, case, strap), compatibility depends on exact dimensions: it's best to choose a model after verifying the measurements.
