Essential Information About the Heil The Fin Dynamic Microphone

  • Vintage "Turner Mic" look instantly recognizable, ideal for stage and image (video podcasting, streaming).

  • Clear, rich, and full-range sound inspired by the PR20 capsule, designed for both spoken voice and singing.

  • LED lighting powered by phantom (P48V required only for the light), perfect for creating a visual signature without complicating the setup.

  • Cardioid directivity to better isolate the source and limit bleed, with a rear attenuation rated at -30 dB.

A Tribute to the Legendary Microphone, with Heil's Sonic DNA

The Heil The Fin adopts the aesthetic codes of classic broadcast and stage microphones, featuring a slender silhouette and a design reminiscent of the famous "Turner Mic." Behind this vintage look, the goal remains clearly modern: to offer a dynamic microphone that catches the eye on camera while maintaining serious and usable sound reproduction in production. This combination of image + performance has already won over demanding environments, with The Fin being used in Hollywood film productions, notably in the Hunger Games series.

Within the Heil lineup, The Fin positions itself as a "show & studio ready" alternative: a strong visual identity (thanks to the LED lighting) combined with a solid technical foundation directly linked to the sonic philosophy of the PR20 capsule.

For Whom and What: Voice, Image, and Performance

Designed as a dynamic vocal microphone, The Fin targets content creators as well as musicians and technicians who want a microphone as photogenic as it is effective. In video podcasting and streaming, its design becomes part of the set while delivering clean and intelligible voice capture. In live settings, its cardioid directivity helps keep the voice upfront and contain ambient noise, making it a relevant choice when the stage is busy or monitors are present.

Its specified frequency response (50 - 18000 Hz) and ability to handle a high maximum level (142 dB) allow for versatile use: spoken voice, singing, and more broadly any sound capture where the reassuring character of a dynamic mic is desired without sacrificing definition.

Illuminated Design and Performance-Oriented Construction

Phantom-Powered LED Lighting: Visual Impact Without Audio Constraints

The The Fin features lighting composed of 4 red LEDs (on this version). An important point for studio or stage integration: phantom power P48V is required only for the lighting. In other words, the audio section remains that of a dynamic microphone, while the light is managed via the presence (or absence) of phantom power on the preamp or console. This is a simple solution to achieve a striking visual effect on camera without adding extra accessories.

PR20-Inspired Capsule and Cardioid Directivity

Based on a 2.86 cm diameter capsule, The Fin aims for a clear, rich, and full-frequency reproduction. The cardioid directivity helps focus the capture on the source in front of the microphone while reducing what comes from the rear. The rear attenuation rated at 180 degrees off-axis: -30 dB helps limit unwanted noise (audience, nearby instruments, monitors), a particularly appreciated feature in live recording, studio sets, or untreated rooms.

Level Handling and Capture Consistency

With a maximum level of 142 dB, The Fin handles powerful voices and dynamic environments comfortably. Its 600-ohm impedance integrates easily into common audio chains (preamps, interfaces, consoles), while maintaining the expected behavior of a dynamic microphone: solid, controllable output, and generally tolerant of real-world shooting or stage conditions.
