Summary of This Score

It is the dance, rhythmic accents, and Spanish coloring that make Isaac Albéniz's piano music so irresistible, and Asturias is one of the most striking examples. The piece combines these elements with remarkable refinement: an almost percussive drive, a pulse reminiscent of folk traditions, and writing that exploits the full sonic palette of the piano to suggest other instruments.

First published in 1892 in the suite Chants d'Espagne under the title Prélude (HN 782), then republished in 1901 before being incorporated under the title Asturias into the Suite Espagnole (HN 783), this piece quickly became one of the composer's most beloved works. Its fame owes as much to its mysterious atmosphere as to its characteristic "guitar sounds," which conjure the image of a nocturnal flamenco, between rhythmic tension and bursts of light.

Offered here in its original Urtext version for solo piano, this separate edition highlights the precision of the musical text and allows an approach to the work with a stylistic rigor: management of repetitions, control of attacks, balance of sound layers, and search for timbres. A must-have to enrich one's Spanish piano repertoire, whether for personal practice, interpretation study, or performance.
