Summary of This Score

In 1793, Joseph Haydn wrote to the Elector Prince of Bonn to highlight the progress of his student, even stating (without bias, in his own words) that Beethoven would one day be counted "among the greatest composers in Europe." The prince's response, however, was more nuanced: the Parthia op. 103, sent as evidence, seemed already partially known to him, implying that Beethoven had mainly reworked an earlier composition.

In any case, this score highlights an essential facet of the young Beethoven: a writing style already solid, inventive, and technically accomplished. The Parthia and the Rondo WoO 25 (originally conceived as the final movement) thus form a particularly revealing set of his sense of balance, structure, and character, while offering a rich musical ground for collective work and attentive listening between sections.

Offered in Urtext edition, this publication aims for a clear and musical reading, with a carefully established text. It is also distinguished by the addition of extra parts for horns in F, a practical asset for musicians seeking adapted playing options. A prime reference for deepening Beethoven's repertoire and approaching a work that is both historical and very lively to perform.
