Summary of This Score
At the end of the 18th century, variations on "fashionable" themes, often borrowed from contemporary operas, enjoyed considerable success. The young Beethoven fully embraced this tradition by offering three variation cycles for cello and piano, written on immediately recognizable melodies: two come from "Zauberflöte" (The Magic Flute) by Mozart, and the third from a theme in Handel's oratorio "Judas Maccabaeus".
It is unknown whether these works were commissioned or created for a specific occasion, but their reception was very favorable: the numerous reprints at the time testify to their popularity upon publication. Musically, Beethoven already displays inventive and contrasting writing, alternating virtuosity, elegance of expression, and a sense of dialogue between the cello and piano. The theme is first presented clearly, then transformed through variations that explore articulation, phrasing, harmonic colors, and rhythmic energy in turn.
This edition gathers the following three works (titles preserved): 12 Variations on "Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen" from Mozart's "Zauberflöte" F major op. 66, 12 Variations on a theme from Händel's Oratorio "Judas Maccabaus" G major WoO 45, 7 Variations on "Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen" from Mozart's "Zauberflöte" E flat major WoO 46. The proposed revision is based on updated musicological data from the critical commentary of the complete edition of Beethoven's works, to offer a coherent musical text for both study and performance. The hardcover binding further enhances daily usability, whether at the music stand, in rehearsal, or in class.
