Summary of This Score

With the Études op.10 (published in 1833) and op.25 (published in 1837), Chopin revolutionized the history of piano literature: for the first time, pieces designed to develop a specific technical difficulty reach a level of inspiration and expressive power worthy of the greatest concert works. Each étude has a distinct character, its own dramaturgy, and inventive piano writing that places virtuosity at the service of melody, harmony, and color. Some pages, among the most famous and spectacular of the cycle, have become essential repertoire for every pianist, such as the "Revolutionary Étude" op.10 no.12, emblematic for its drive and intensity. This Urtext edition not only brings together the two cycles op.10 and op.25 but also adds three études without opus composed for a piano method published in Paris in 1840: true lyrical miniatures, as refined as they are concentrated, which ideally complement the twenty-four major études. An essential collection for deepening technique (independence, velocity, tone, endurance) while nurturing interpretation and musicality.
