Summary of This Score

Composed during the summer of 1915, while Debussy had withdrawn with his family to a country house near Dieppe, this cycle of "Études" reflects a period of creation carried out with great focus. The composer, known for his exacting standards and critical view of his own work, said he was particularly proud to have completed this work. Through these pages, the goal is not only to develop instrumental mechanics: Debussy insists that technique must open access to music, not replace it. These études thus invite the pianist to strengthen precision, flexibility, and sound control, while cultivating color, balance of textures, and clarity of discourse. A true training ground for the concert pianist, this score naturally fits into the path of pianists wishing to approach a high level, enrich their expressive palette, and deepen the Debussian style.
