Summary of This Score

Claude Debussy
La plus que lente - Waltz

At the beginning of the 20th century, the slow waltz established itself as a staple of Parisian salons. Debussy playfully engages with it with an elegance tinged with mischief by composing "La plus que lente," a piano waltz with instantly recognizable charm, blending harmonic refinement, rhythmic flexibility, and worldly winks. The score bears the performance indication "molto rubato con morbidezza", a valuable direction for approaching the touch, phrasing, and controlled freedom characteristic of Debussy's writing.

Following the first edition published in July 1910, the Parisian publisher Durand issued the same year a separate print in Le Figaro, as well as anonymous arrangements for violin and piano and for piano four hands. Debussy later created his own orchestral version, which he recorded in 1913 at a surprisingly brisk tempo on a Welte-Mignon roll. This separate Henle-Urtext edition includes an expanded introduction (compared to the HN 1194 and 404 collections), renewing interest in this short but subtle piece, ideal for working on color, phrasing, dynamics, and the art of rubato without losing sight of the dance.
