Summary of This Score

In 1925, the music press was enthusiastic about George Gershwin's ambition: to compose, like Bach and Chopin, a series of preludes covering all keys. The initial project envisioned 24 Preludes, of which Gershwin publicly presented five pieces on December 4, 1926. However, absorbed by his intense activity as a composer and pianist, especially in the Broadway world, he ultimately published during his lifetime only the famous three Preludes for Piano (1927). This Urtext edition highlights these three piano miniatures, conceived as true character pieces: a concentrated dose of Gershwin's style, both direct and at times virtuosic, and deeply rooted in rhythm. It features refined work on pulse, accents, harmonic colors, and phrasing-essential elements for performing this music with the right balance between "classical" precision and underlying swing. A reference score to enrich your repertoire, refine your rhythmic playing, and explore early 20th-century American piano writing.
