Summary of this score

The twelve "London Symphonies" represent the culmination of Joseph Haydn's symphonic work, composed for impresario Johann Peter Salomon and premiered under the composer's direction during his London stays (1791-92 and 1794-95). Symphony No. 96 in D major, dated 1791, belongs to the very first symphonies conceived in this context: music designed for the English audience, their concert halls, and the direct impact of the performance.

Often referred to by the nickname "The Miracle," this symphony is associated with a spectacular episode-the fall of a heavy chandelier without injury-but this story actually concerned another concert featuring a different Haydn symphony. Although the title arose from an erroneous attribution, it fits the energy of the work: Haydn deploys an intelligence of form and harmonic imagination that captivates both analyst and listener.

From the opening of each of the four movements, motifs in perfect chords become a signature, a material that Haydn transforms with consummate skill in development. The discourse alternates elegance and virtuosity, establishes contrasting atmospheres, then shifts them through unexpected yet always controlled modulations. This study-format score thus provides an ideal tool to follow the architecture, understand thematic work, and appreciate the subtle harmonic relationships typical of Haydn's late style.

Designed to accompany both musicians and curious music lovers, this study edition reproduces the text established by the complete edition of Haydn's works, a guarantee of rigor and reliability. The informative preface and brief critical commentary offer useful reference points to situate the work, grasp its compositional stakes, and approach Symphony No. 96 as an essential reference in classical scores and the symphonic repertoire.
