Summary of This Score

Joseph Haydn
Piano Sonata in E-flat major Hob. XVI:49

Dated June 1, 1790 in the autograph manuscript, the Piano Sonata in E-flat major Hob. XVI:49 belongs to a particularly inspired period of Haydn's output and reveals a keyboard art that is at once luminous, inventive, and deeply expressive. Written for Marianne von Gennzinger, a close friend of the composer with whom he made music, this sonata bears the mark of an intimate exchange between creator and performer, down to the details of piano writing.

The edition highlights the richness of the score, notably the superb episode in B-flat minor at the center of the second movement, where hand crossing can become a true technical and musical challenge. Where the dedicatee confided her difficulties with this passage, the fingerings proposed by Evgeny Kissin offer a concrete and inspiring interpretation, useful for building the gesture, clarifying the voices, and preserving the fluidity of the discourse.

Prepared by Georg Feder and enriched with a preface and critical commentary written by Silke Schloen, this edition from G. Henle Verlag provides a serious framework for study, interpretation, and stylistic understanding. A choice score for pianists seeking an Urtext reference, clear presentation, and editorial support worthy of this "treasure" of the classical repertoire.
