Summary of This Score

Piano Quartet in A minor highlights a little-known facet of Gustav Mahler, often associated with large symphonies and Lieder. Composed during his student years (1876-1878), this piano quartet attests to his early mastery of form and musical drama. Among his many chamber music attempts, it is the only work of this type whose trace has been preserved.

The score offers the first movement, the only one fully completed, rediscovered in the 1960s and published for the first time in 1973. One can perceive the influence of Brahms, but the writing already reveals a distinctive personality: dense textures, harmonic tension, and above all a piano treated in an almost symphonic manner, engaging in dialogue with the string trio rather than merely providing accompaniment.

For deeper study, the edition also includes in the appendix a sketch in the form of a fragment of another movement, a scherzo for the same ensemble. A valuable addition for pianists and chamber musicians curious to understand Mahler's compositional process and to explore the stylistic continuity between his youthful works and his more mature language. The edition is prepared by Christoph Flamm, with fingerings by Klaus Schilde, offering a reliable support for rehearsal work, analysis, and concert interpretation.
