Summary of This Score
With these Piano Trios, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy firmly establishes himself in one of the major genres of chamber music. After a youthful work and an abandoned attempt in 1831/32, he reaches full maturity with the Piano Trio in D minor op. 49, before extending this success six years later with the Trio in C minor op. 66. Upon the publication of the first trio, Robert Schumann did not hesitate to call Mendelssohn the "Mozart of the 19th century", highlighting the subtle balance between classical heritage and Romantic spirit. This edition offers a meticulously revised musical text, established from the most recent research findings, to provide a clear and coherent reading for rehearsal work as well as performance. It is intended for musicians and ensembles wishing to approach these pieces with a carefully prepared score, ideal for refining articulation, voice leading, and the interplay between piano and strings. Additionally, the publication includes the flute part (HN 1297) corresponding to the alternative version of op. 49, where the flute replaces the violin, an arrangement made by Mendelssohn himself.
