Summary of This Score

Études-Tableaux belongs to the great tradition of concert études, following in the footsteps of Chopin and Liszt: here, the pianistic difficulty is never gratuitous; it serves an intensely expressive and "pictorial" writing. Each piece functions as a sound painting, with its colors, atmospheres, and dramatic impulses, making this collection a top choice for enriching a recital program or deepening high-level technical work.

Rachmaninoff composed two cycles of Études-Tableaux, each initially conceived with nine pieces. For opus 33, he ultimately withdrew three études just before publication. This Urtext edition respects that choice by offering six Études-Tableaux for op. 33, in the order intended by the composer for printing. The two études that were preserved but not originally published are included in the appendix, allowing for a more complete view of the corpus.

The volume also gathers the nine Études-Tableaux op. 39, a major cycle in the piano repertoire, renowned for its musical density, rich textures, and coordination challenges. The fingerings by Marc-André Hamelin provide real comfort for reading and study, offering coherent solutions for voice leading, wide stretches, fast passages, and powerful chords. An ideal score for demanding pianists seeking a reliable, clear edition focused on performance.
