Summary of This Score

The title Miroirs by Maurice Ravel (1904/05) refers to the idea of "mirror images" of the universe of human experience. Among the nature evocations present in this cycle, "Une barque sur l'océan" stands out as a maritime scene of rare imaginative power, often compared to the orchestral work "La mer" by Debussy, composed around the same time.

On the piano, the sound material unfolds in large continuous arpeggios that carry characteristic resonances: sonorities in fifths, fourths, and seconds, subtly articulated by rhythm. This expansive writing creates a sensation of constant movement, as if the instrument becomes both a water surface, breath, and surf. The listener perceives both a concrete image-a boat at the mercy of wind and waves-and a more symbolic reading, where the sea's instability reflects the variations of human life.

Following "Alborado del gracioso" (HN 1295), the G. Henle publishing house offers here another piece from Miroirs in a separate edition. Ideal for enriching a piano repertoire dedicated to Ravel, this publication allows work on color, the management of sound layers, and fluidity of passages, while exploring the refined aesthetics of the early 20th century.
