Composed in 1882, Carl Reinecke's Flute Sonata Op. 167, nicknamed "Ondine," is one of the great works of the Romantic flute repertoire. Its title refers to the famous tale by Friedrich de La Motte-Fouqué, centered on the tragic love of a mermaid, but the work does not present itself as program music. In the manner of Schumann's poetic titles, this evocation mainly serves to establish an atmosphere and to nourish the performer's imagination.
