Summary of This Score

In his piano arrangement of "Widmung" (the lied "Du meine Seele, du mein Herz"), Franz Liszt does not merely transpose a vocal line: he creates a true romantic confession, crafted for the stage. The melody, originally of great expressive simplicity in Schumann's version, becomes under Liszt's fingers an inner song carried by dense pianistic writing, rich harmonies, and an almost orchestral breath. The climax, on "Mein guter Geist, mein bess'res Ich" ("my good spirit, my better self"), concentrates the emotional tension of the work, with chords to be played con somma passione, inviting a full, committed, and controlled sound.

A precious feature: in Liszt's autograph manuscript, the lied text appears above the melody. The first edition published in Leipzig in 1848 faithfully reproduces this layout, which explains why the same piece is known today under two titles. This Henle-Urtext edition offers Liszt's most famous arrangement, ensuring clarity of reading and musical coherence, with detailed work on articulation, legato, phrase breathing, and sound layers. Ideal for advanced pianists seeking a reference score that is both musical, demanding, and deeply expressive.
