Conceived as a humorous occasional piece for the Carnival concert of his cellist friend Charles-Joseph Lebouc in March 1886, The Carnival of the Animals was an immediate success, to the point that Camille Saint-Saëns soon requested a ban on its performance and publication. The composer feared that this "Grand Zoological Fantasy"-consisting of 14 short pieces for eleven instruments -would overshadow his so-called "serious" works.
Printed only a few months after the composer's death, the work then embarked on a true world tour, both in its original version and through countless arrangements. This popularity is no coincidence: each movement is a musical tableau, instantly evocative, showcasing Saint-Saëns' sense of color, caricature, and instrumental writing. It is precisely this originality, combined with a form in short sequences, that makes the score particularly suitable for music education and ensemble practice.
