Composed in the spirit of the great virtuosic works of the 19th century, Camille Saint-Saëns' Concert Piece in F minor, Op. 94 follows an approach similar to Schumann's "Konzertstück": to fully exploit the capabilities of a modernized horn. The work originated from the initiative of the French horn player Henri Chaussier, who wished to demonstrate the advantages of his "omnitonic horn," a model designed to expand the technical and chromatic possibilities of the instrument.
Although Chaussier's innovation was not widely adopted by the horn community, Saint-Saëns' score has stood the test of time. Highly appreciated both in concerts and competitions, this single-movement piece combines brilliance, lyricism, and a strong sense of line, while demanding solid control of breath, register shifts, and articulation.
