Summary of This Score

Erik Satie
Nocturnes
brings together the five Nocturnes composed in 1919, often considered the natural conclusion of the series of piano collections that structure a large part of his work. Satie engages in a dialogue with the nocturne tradition, adopting certain markers of the genre popularized by John Field and then elevated by Frédéric Chopin: a rocking pace, a nocturnal breathing, and a tripartite structure guiding both listening and interpretation.

But far from a mere reference to the romantic model, the harmony stands out with a very personal identity, stemming from a system devised by the composer himself. The result: music that appears simple, with natural phrasing, which mainly requires finesse of touch, a sense of sound layers, and careful pedaling management to let the lines sing without weighing down the discourse.

These Nocturnes also surprise by their tone: Satie shows himself unusually serious here, distancing himself from the parodic, absurd, or "cabaret" spirit often associated with his universe. As he himself said, this is "another expression of me": an ideal collection for pianists wishing to explore a more introspective, poetic, and focused Satie, while working on musicality, balance, and color.
