Started in December 1820, this string quartet in C minor D 703 was unfortunately never completed: Schubert stops after the first movement, and the autograph of the second movement breaks off very early, after numerous revisions. This unfinished character does not diminish the power of the music: on the contrary, this initial movement has established itself as a true little treasure of the chamber music repertoire.
The publication history adds to the legend: having come into the hands of Johannes Brahms, the manuscript inspired such enthusiasm after a performance in 1867 that Brahms encouraged its publication, which appeared three years later as a "posthumous work" by Schubert.
