Summary of Liederkreis op. 24
Schumann was the first composer to set a complete cycle of Heinrich Heine's poems to music, and it was during his famous "year of the lied" (1840) that he composed the Liederkreis op. 24. The choice of texts, taken from the Buch der Lieder (Book of Songs), gives rise to a journey through nine lieder where the piano writing and vocal line respond to each other with a typically Schumannian finesse. The composer's enthusiasm for the voice, entrusted to Clara, is felt in the variety of moods: lyrical outbursts, subtle nuances, harmonic tensions, and a sense of the word serving the narrative.
This Urtext edition is offered in a version for medium voice, with a transposed edition prepared by Schumann specialist Kazuko Ozawa. The goal is clear: to allow singers with a lower tessitura to make this major cycle their own in comfortable keys, while preserving the musical balance and logic of the discourse. Created with the support of the renowned lieder accompanist Gerold Huber, the transpositions are designed to remain natural on the piano and fluid in the singing. The score is complemented by a rich preface on the genesis of the work and a detailed critical commentary, invaluable for conservatory study, competitions, or recitals.
