Summary of This Score

Scriabin (Skrjabin) gave his 2nd G-sharp minor Piano Sonata a form in two movements and a highly narrative atmosphere, where harmonic poetry and the resonance of the piano occupy a central place. This sonata has a particularly long genesis: the first sketches date back to 1892, but the composer revised it many times. In the summer of 1896, after having already performed it several times publicly in Paris, Scriabin expressed his dissatisfaction despite multiple revisions, before finally considering himself satisfied in 1898, the year of its printed publication.

This Urtext edition stands out for the quality of its sources: it relies not only on the first edition closely overseen by Scriabin but also takes into account a performance recorded by the composer on rolls (Ludwig Hupfeld player piano). For the performer, this is a major asset: beyond the accuracy of the text, this approach sheds light on the logic of phrasing, articulation, and musical breathing.
