Summary of This Score

Richard Strauss
Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major, Op. 11

Composed when Richard Strauss was about 18 years old, this first horn concerto is distinguished by writing that is both brilliant, lyrical, and remarkably idiomatic. It has established itself over generations as a cornerstone of the repertoire, alongside major classical works, and is an almost essential passage for any horn player wishing to approach a major concerto.

This publication is based on the work of Peter Damm (Editor), former principal horn of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden and a recognized soloist. His approach is not limited to stage experience (over 170 public performances): it also relies on in-depth investigations of the sources and the compositional context. The result is a Urtext edition that can be considered a reference, designed to offer a reliable and musically coherent reading.

The Studien-Edition (study score) targets practical use: rehearsals, following the form, identifying transitions, understanding balances and orchestration. The musical text also corrects numerous errors found in the first edition, making it a safe choice for precise work, whether in conservatories, competition preparation, or professional settings.

Finally, the presence of Johannes Umbreit (Piano Reduction) adds a very useful dimension for studio work: soloist preparation, tempo setting, and rehearsals with accompaniment. The whole is offered in paperback binding, in the compact pocket score format.
