Romance for Cello in F Major
Only a few months after completing his Cello Sonata op. 6, Richard Strauss composed a new work for the instrument: a Romance for cello and orchestra, unpublished during his lifetime. According to the autograph manuscript, the composition was completed on June 27, 1883, and Strauss also made a piano reduction. This Romance is often considered one of his most accomplished early works: a singing discourse, a generous and expressive cello line, and already very masterful writing.
Despite some well-received public performances, notably by cellist Hanu Wihan (then principal cello of the Munich Court Orchestra), the piece remained overshadowed by the sonata for a long time. It was only after a first posthumous publication in 1986 that this refined page regained its place in the repertoire.
