A 1960s Console Secret, Finally Back in the Lineup
Originally, Lang Electronics Inc. made its name in the 1960s with a simple philosophy: to offer professional audio gear of very high quality, while remaining accessible and durable. Among its devices, the PEQ-2 Program Equalizer became the most coveted... and also one of the hardest to find. Few units were produced, and those still in circulation are jealously guarded by their owners. With Heritage Audio's acquisition of Lang Electronics Inc., this nearly impossible-to-find design is reborn as a faithful reissue, developed after extensive study of vintage units. The result: the character of a legendary passive equalizer, updated to fit modern configurations, notably in stereo processing for the mix bus.
Who and What Studio Uses?
The LANG PEQ-2 targets sound engineers, producers, and studios seeking a musical equalizer capable of quickly transforming a source without making it harsh or artificial. Its signature is especially appreciated on the mix bus, where a too soft or poorly defined low end can harm overall impact. It is also well suited for sound shaping tasks in recording and mixing: vocals, drums, guitars, keyboards, overheads, or subgroups. Thanks to its independent Boost and Cut controls, it invites exploration of less "textbook" EQ curves, often yielding results difficult to achieve with other passive designs.

Questions frequently asked
What sonic character does the Heritage Audio PEQ-2 bring to a mix bus?
Its passive inductive architecture delivers natural equalization curves, with the bass described as tighter. The two Low and High bands allow boosting impact without excessively widening the low end of the spectrum.
Can bass boost and cut be applied at different frequencies?
The Low Shelf Boost and Low Shelf Cut sections, called Droop, have independent frequency selections. This setup enables supporting the low end while attenuating a less defined bass area.
Does the PEQ-2 offer an air control at 20 kHz?
The High Peak Boost section includes a 20 kHz option and a bandwidth control ranging from Sharp to Broad.
How is this model used in stereo?
Each unit processes one channel and occupies 2 rack units. Stereo processing therefore requires two matched units. Detented controls facilitate aligning settings between both channels.
What connectivity is provided on this equalizer?
The circuit uses transformer-balanced inputs and outputs. The analog outputs are available in XLR format.
