Hohner Rocket: a modern diatonic in the spirit of the Progressive series

Alongside the "standard" Richter harmonicas, Hohner has developed models with designs and playing sensations tailored for specific techniques and distinct styles. The Rocket fits this approach: a diatonic designed to offer more comfort, better sealing, and greater power, while retaining the Richter DNA. Within the Hohner range, it stands out with a performance-oriented concept, associated with the "Progressive" universe, appreciated by harmonica players known for their expressiveness and virtuosity.

For whom, and for which styles?

In C, the Hohner Rocket is an excellent choice for both learning and stage use: the key of C is widely used in methods, workshops, and repertoire. It suits beginner to advanced musicians seeking a responsive instrument, easy to make sound, and capable of sustaining energetic playing. Its natural playground includes blues, rock, folk, country, pop, as well as all modern approaches to the diatonic, including expressive effects (bends) popularized in blues.

Sound and design

The Rocket aims for a powerful sound and immediate response. The very widely open covers promote generous projection and a sense of openness, while the channel design and careful sealing support good dynamics (easy nuances from pianissimo to fortissimo). The plastic body with rounded edges provides a soft and stable contact, much appreciated during long sessions. The 0.9-millimeter brass reeds contribute to a clear attack and good sustain, with generally easy playability across the entire range.

Diatonic or chromatic?

A diatonic harmonica is designed around a key (here C ) and a layout that naturally facilitates chords when blowing and drawing. It is the preferred tool for blues, notably thanks to bends that allow for the typical expressiveness of the style and access to certain "missing" notes. Conversely, the chromatic harmonica aims to access all notes via a dedicated system, often sought after in jazz and classical music. The Hohner Rocket is indeed a diatonic, designed for power, comfort, and expressive playing.
