Blues Harp: a HOHNER icon at the heart of the MS series
For decades, the name Blues Harp has been associated with the "Richter" diatonic harmonica and that immediately recognizable sound aesthetic in blues, rock, and folk. At HOHNER, the MS (Modular System) series holds a special place: it is based on an integrated design concept where elements are designed to be interchangeable within the range. The result: you enjoy an instrument with a strong character while keeping the possibility to evolve your setup within the MS universe.
For whom and for which styles?
The Hohner Blues Harp MS is especially aimed at beginner to intermediate musicians who want an expressive harmonica capable of "speaking" in the mix, and at more advanced players looking for an ideal tuning to work on bends. Its A flat key provides a darker, more mellow color, appreciated in blues, folk, rock, country, and rhythmic accompaniment thanks to the very accessible natural chords on a Richter diatonic.
Sound and design
With its 0.9-millimeter brass reed plates and 20 reeds, this harmonica aims for a clear response, good stability, and projection suitable for both amplified and acoustic playing. The doussie wood body (brown finish) provides an organic feel under the fingers, while the lacquered doussie mouthpiece coating promotes a softer and more consistent contact. The stainless steel covers complete the set with a robust finish designed to withstand frequent use.
Diatonic or chromatic
A diatonic harmonica is designed around a given key (here A flat ): it facilitates chord playing by blowing/drawing and allows, thanks to reed interactions and bending techniques, to obtain additional notes widely used in blues. In contrast, a chromatic harmonica provides access to all notes via a dedicated mechanism, often favored in jazz and more modulating repertoires. The Blues Harp MS is indeed a diatonic of the Richter type, ideal for expressive phrasing and rhythmic accompaniment.
