Blues Harp MS: A Cult Model in the Hohner Universe

At Hohner, the Blues Harp has established itself as one of the essential references among Richter-type diatonic harmonicas, so much so that it has been associated for decades with the "little devil's music" beloved by blues enthusiasts. This version is part of the MS series (Modular System), a design approach unique to Hohner: the idea is to offer a coherent platform whose elements are designed to be combined within the MS family to tailor the instrument to the musician's preferences.

For Which Musician and Styles?

Tuned in F (Fa), this Blues Harp MS is well suited for beginner to intermediate harmonica players seeking a responsive and characterful instrument, as well as for more advanced players looking for a diatonic with a distinctive personality. Its natural playground remains blues (Chicago, country blues), but it is equally relevant in folk, country, rock, and "roots" accompaniment, notably thanks to the Richter tuning which facilitates blow/draw chords and expressive phrasing.

Sound and Design

The Blues Harp MS stands out with a warm and gritty timbre, supported by its doussie wood body and a design optimized for projection. The 20 reeds provide a response suited to typical diatonic techniques, especially bending, which allows access to missing chromatic notes and that iconic plaintive blues color. The 0.9 mm brass reeds contribute to sound stability and sustain, while the stainless steel covers ensure good durability and a sleek look. The lacquered doussie wood mouthpiece offers a natural and pleasant feel, particularly appreciated during long playing sessions.

Diatonic or Chromatic?

A diatonic harmonica is built around a key (here F ): it emphasizes the scale notes and facilitates chords as well as typical blues, folk, or rock playing effects (bends). A chromatic harmonica, on the other hand, provides access to all notes via a mechanism (usually a slide), making it very versatile in jazz or classical music. The Hohner Blues Harp MS is indeed a diatonic model, designed for expressiveness and groove in "roots" styles.
