What iZotope Nectar 4 Is For

iZotope Nectar 4 is a plugin designed to produce, clean, and mix all types of vocals in one tool: singing, rap, voice-over, podcast, dubbing, and spoken word. It combines essential treatments of a modern vocal chain to save time while maintaining sonic consistency across tracks. Whether working in a home studio or advanced production, Nectar 4 facilitates achieving a stable, clear, and mix-ready vocal.

Main Features

A modular channel strip to build your vocal chain

With its 13 modules, Nectar 4 adapts equally well to intimate vocals, aggressive takes, or stacked choirs. You build your chain module by module depending on the source (correction, cleaning, dynamics, color, effects), with a clear and fast workflow. Each treatment can also be used as an individual component plugin, convenient for inserting a specific module exactly where needed in your session.

ALM: consistent gain, more transparent

The Auto Level Module (ALM) targets a steady level while preserving a natural sound, useful before applying equalization, saturation, or effects. The goal is to limit side effects of dynamic control (pumping, overly raised breaths, crushed transients) to obtain a cleaner and more stable foundation.

The ALM Tame Noise function goes further by distinguishing tonal content (sung material) from non-tonal. Thus, the algorithm mainly levels musical elements, avoiding unnecessarily raising residual noise, certain rubbing sounds, or recording artifacts.

Vocal Assistant and working with references

The Vocal Assistant analyzes your voice and generates a custom preset based on a reference. You save valuable time converging toward a targeted aesthetic: upfront modern vocal, softer and rounder sound, or more pronounced presence. Combined with iZotope Audiolens, you can also draw inspiration from vocals in tracks to quickly guide treatment direction and speed up decisions.

Musical cleaning: breaths, resonances, harsh areas

The Breath Control module reduces breaths more naturally to avoid an overly "cut" or artificial result, especially useful when compression and saturation make breaths intrusive.

The Dynamic EQ offers more surgical control than a static EQ on passages that vary over time. With Follow EQ mode, Nectar 4 can detect and attenuate resonances in real time to tame nasality, harshness, and low-mid buildup while preserving the energy and life of the performance.

Voices and Backer: harmonies, doubles, and backing vocals

To thicken a chorus, create responses, or build a more produced vocal background, Nectar 4 includes Voices (layer stacking, artificial harmonies, varied profiles) and offers MIDI control for more precise writing better integrated into the arrangement.

The Backer module is oriented toward "backing singers": it generates support vocals from 8 styles or user-created styles via reference targets. This is a quick approach to widen a chorus, reinforce a bridge, or give a dense, pop signature without multiplying takes.

Pre-leveling and communication between instances

Auto-Level mode can adjust the incoming level before processing to stabilize the behavior of subsequent modules. Nectar 4 also offers cross-communication with other iZotope plugin instances to better manage tonal balance and certain masking phenomena in a busy mix.
