A Signature Overdrive Designed Like a "Wide Open" Amp

The Jackson Audio Belle Starr was born from an in-depth collaboration with Drew Shirley (Switchfoot), centered around a simple idea: capturing the character of small amps pushed to their limits to achieve that very musical blend of clarity, natural compression, and grit that "breaks up" just enough. Here, it's not about chasing gain: the Belle Starr targets that magical zone between clean boost, edge of breakup, and light crunch, with a very gradual response across the GAIN knob's sweep.

Within the Jackson Audio lineup, it stands out as a "feel-first" overdrive: a pedal that prioritizes dynamics and expressiveness, capable of adapting to many amps and setups, whether you're playing through a clear Fender, a bright Vox, or a more aggressive Marshall.

Who Is the Belle Starr For?

The Belle Starr is ideal if you're looking for a natural overdrive that respects your attack and your guitar's character. It suits both the intermediate player seeking a first "premium" saturation that's easy to dial in, and the experienced musician wanting a foundational drive to leave on for long periods or stack with other pedals.

Style-wise, it shines in blues, rock, indie, pop, alt, and anything that calls for lively crunch rather than massive distortion. In the studio, it adds credible grit without "squashing" your playing; live, it serves as a textured boost to cut through the mix. On a pedalboard, it makes an excellent first stage before another overdrive, fuzz, or heavier distortion.

Controls and Design: Simple but Highly "Sculptable"

The Belle Starr keeps it essential with four controls designed to be musical across a wide range. The GAIN and VOLUME pair lets you choose between a clean boost that's hard to distinguish from a clean tone, then gradually add texture up to medium crunch, without level jumps or abrupt changes in feel. The VOLUME behavior is particularly interesting: with low GAIN and high VOLUME, the pedal acts as a big booster with genuinely useful tone controls.

The BODY control is a very powerful active bass EQ: perfect for thickening a single-coil guitar, tightening up a somewhat thin amp, or conversely lightening the low end to maintain definition with humbuckers. The TONE is a passive treble control with a "cut"-style behavior: handy for smoothing a bright amp, taming a slightly harsh pickup, or bringing the sound forward without harshness. Both controls feature a detent center for quickly returning to a neutral baseline.

Finally, the choice of MOSFET transistor clipping (instead of traditional silicon diodes) contributes to this "amp-like" overdrive feel: a smooth, harmonic saturation that follows your picking hand and guitar volume very naturally. The mechanical true bypass ensures clean integration into an effects chain, especially if you like to keep your base tone intact when the pedal is off.

The Sound

To the ear, the Belle Starr sits within a transparent but lively aesthetic: it doesn't mask your guitar, it makes it "react" as if the amp were pushed. Expect warm grit, progressive breakup, light compression when playing harder, and excellent clean-up ability via the guitar's volume knob. The low end can be round and present (thanks to the BODY) without becoming overwhelming, while the high frequencies are finely adjustable to stay clear without harshness.

This approach is favored by nuance- and groove-oriented guitarists like Drew Shirley, and also fits funkier, modern styles seeking an articulate drive, à la Cory Wong. If your goal is an overdrive that "breathes," moving from subtle support to expressive crunch, the Belle Starr is particularly convincing.
